AVImark vs. Shepherd: Reporting Compared
By Diego Pittaluga, Founder / Product Lead at VetPulse
Shepherd markets itself heavily on modern design and workflow speed, which makes the comparison to AVImark — a system many owners associate with a dated interface — feel more lopsided than it actually is once reporting specifically is the question being asked.
AVImark vs. Shepherd reporting, at a glance
| Capability | AVImark | Shepherd |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment | On-premise | Cloud |
| Real-time data | No (local database) | Yes |
| Interface | Legacy desktop UI | Modern browser-based |
| Per-provider breakdown | Manual report config | No |
| API access | No public API | Yes |
Interface modernity isn't the same as reporting depth
Shepherd's browser-based interface and real-time data sync are genuine, meaningful upgrades over AVImark's on-premise architecture for day-to-day workflow speed. But neither system natively separates performance by individual provider in a way that answers which doctor is actually driving a change in the practice's aggregate numbers — that gap exists in both, modern interface or not.
What migrating from AVImark to Shepherd actually fixes
The concrete improvement in a AVImark-to-Shepherd migration is live data access and a real API a third-party tool can build on — not a native reporting upgrade within Shepherd itself. An owner migrating specifically to solve a reporting gap, rather than for interface and workflow reasons, should plan on the same third-party reporting layer either system would need.
What this means for reporting either way
Whichever of the two a practice runs, neither natively answers the ongoing, owner-level question of whether the practice is getting healthier or not — that requires either regular manual export-and-spreadsheet work or a reporting layer built on top. VetPulse connects to both, along with AVImark, Cornerstone, and IDEXX Neo, and surfaces the same weekly briefing and real-time alerts regardless of which system sits underneath.
