Per-Vet Performance Benchmarks: What to Track and Why It Matters
Owners of multi-vet practices often sense that performance varies between providers long before they can point to a number that proves it. Two vets seeing a similar volume of appointments can produce very different outcomes for the practice, and without a consistent way to measure that gap, it stays a hunch instead of something actionable.
The three metrics that matter most
Average transaction value (ATV) captures how thoroughly a provider is addressing what a visit calls for — not upselling, but not leaving obvious care on the table either. Utilizationmeasures how much of a provider's scheduled time is actually generating revenue versus sitting open or running over. No-show and cancellation rate, tracked per provider rather than clinic-wide, often reveals that scheduling patterns or communication style are driving a meaningfully different rate for one vet versus another.
What the gap actually looks like
Illustrative example — not real clinic data — showing how the same three metrics can diverge between two providers seeing a similar appointment volume:
Compare, don't rank
The purpose of per-provider benchmarking is to find coaching opportunities and workflow gaps, not to produce a leaderboard. A newer associate with a lower ATV may simply need more guidance on communicating treatment recommendations — a very different problem than a scheduling template that's quietly causing one provider's day to run long every afternoon — the kind of scheduling gap that erodes utilization without ever showing up as an obviously empty slot. The number tells you where to look, not what the answer is.
Make it visible weekly, not annually
Practices that only look at provider performance during annual reviews miss months of opportunity to correct course. Surfacing the same three metrics — ATV, utilization, no-show rate — side by side every week turns performance management into an ongoing conversation instead of a once-a-year surprise. That's the approach behind VetPulse's per-vet performance feature.
