How it works
Any inventory item expiring within 30 days is flagged, as long as its value — quantity on hand multiplied by unit cost — is at least $25. Lower-value supplies are filtered out so the alert stays focused on dollars worth acting on.
Severity follows how urgent the soonest-expiring flagged item is: within 7 days (or already expired) is CRITICAL, within 14 daysis HIGH, and within 30 days is MEDIUM. Every flagged item's value is summed into a single total-at-risk figure, so the finding tells you both how many items and how much money.
What this is not
This is expiry and shrinkage detection — it does not handle reordering, purchase orders, or vendor management. If you're looking for a full inventory management system, this isn't it; it's specifically the alert that catches near-expiry stock before it becomes a write-off.
Common questions
- What triggers an inventory expiry alert?
- Any item expiring within 30 days, as long as its value — quantity on hand times unit cost — is at least $25. Lower-value supplies are excluded so the alert stays focused on dollars that actually matter.
- How is severity decided?
- By how soon the most urgent item expires: within 7 days (or already expired) is CRITICAL, within 14 days is HIGH, within 30 days is MEDIUM.
- Does this handle reordering or purchase orders?
- No. This is expiry and shrinkage detection only — it flags what's about to go to waste and its dollar value, not vendor management, purchase orders, or automatic reordering.
- Does it total the dollar value at risk?
- Yes — every flagged item's quantity-on-hand value is summed into a single at-risk total, so you know the size of the problem, not just the item count.
