Cornerstone vs. AVImark: Which Legacy PIMS Reports Better for Owners?
By Diego Pittaluga, Founder / Product Lead at VetPulse
AVImark and Cornerstone are both mature, widely-deployed on-premise systems that independent practices have run reliably for decades. Owners comparing the two on reporting specifically — often while weighing whether to switch between them, or from one to a cloud PIMS entirely — tend to find the differences are more about where the gap shows up than whether one is meaningfully better than the other.
Cornerstone vs. AVImark reporting, at a glance
| Capability | Cornerstone | AVImark |
|---|---|---|
| Report library depth | Extensive — dozens of reports | Solid, narrower set |
| Ease of finding the right report | Harder — buried in volume | Easier — fewer options to sort through |
| Trend view (month-over-month, provider trajectory) | No — manual export required | No — manual export required |
| Data access | On-premise, manual CSV export | On-premise, manual CSV export |
Where they genuinely differ
Cornerstone's report library is the more extensive of the two — production, inventory, and client-activity reports numbering in the dozens — which sounds like an advantage until an owner actually opens the report menu looking for a five-minute Monday-morning answer. AVImark's narrower report set is, in a specific sense, easier to navigate for exactly that reason: fewer options to sort through means less time spent figuring out which report answers the question, even though the underlying data each system can surface is broadly comparable.
Where they fall short in the same way
Neither system offers a native trend view — comparing this month to the same month last year, or watching a specific provider's trajectory over recent weeks, means exporting to a spreadsheet and building the comparison by hand in both cases. Neither proactively flags anything either: a client who hasn't booked in over a year, or inventory approaching its expiration date, is visible in both systems only to someone who already knows to go looking for it. Both are on-premise, desktop-based systems, so getting data into any external tool for analysis means a manual CSV export rather than a live connection either way.
What this means practically
If you're choosing between the two purely on reporting, the honest answer is that neither structurally solves the owner-level reporting gap — the choice comes down to workflow fit elsewhere in the system (scheduling, inventory management, client communication) more than which one reports better. If you're already on one and considering switching to the other specifically to fix reporting, that's very unlikely to be worth the migration effort; see switching PIMS without losing your historical data before making that call.
The layer both need on top
VetPulse connects to both Cornerstone and AVImark via CSV upload and turns whichever one you run into a weekly briefing with trend detection and proactive flags — without requiring anyone to remember which report to run. For the specific gaps on each system individually, see the Cornerstone reports workaround and AVImark reporting limitations.
